After our photos at the Route 66 sign, we planned to ride Highway 1, lunch, Highway 101 back to 1 and Big Sur. We rode a short distance along Ocean Blvd made a quick left onto Pacific Coast Highway 1 – BRAKES!  a traffic jam as far as we could see. Forty minutes and four kilometers later we passed the road works. Finally moving at a decent speed, well almost. The funny thing about USA traffic signals if they change to red just as you are getting close you have time to hop off the bike, go for a walk, have a coffee and at last green. On the positive side if in the very far distance you see the lights changing to green they will still be green when you get to them.

Back to Highway 101 – BRAKES! Another forty minutes for four kilometers, this time a traffic accident. Finally at Santa Maria our first stop. What, the address I programmed into the GPS is wrong? Not me! Thirty minutes later at around 7.00 PM a little jaded we found our accommodation.

Sure slept well that night, a combination of jet lag and an eventful day on the bike.

Off to Carmel for a two night stay but on the way Hearst Castle and a bucket list ride The Big Sur, or Pacific Coast Highway 1.

As a ride it is a lot of work, lots of gear changes, very tight 30 klm turns combined with steep ascents and descents all the time trying to enjoy the views of mountains climbing out of the Pacific.
